Eyelash Extensions: The Truth About Lash Damage

Eyelash extensions have been increasing in popularity over the past couple of years. More and more women are forking hundreds of dollars to get eyelash extensions. But, do eyelash extensions really cause damage? This is one of the most popular questions we get about eyelash extensions, especially from people who have never done eyelash extensions before and because of the damage to the natural lash that can occur when applied.

Thankfully, there are methods you can use to help prevent this and ensure that your natural eyelashes stay healthy. And in this blog, we are going to talk about the things to look out for before getting eyelash extensions.

The first thing you need to know is that eyelash extensions are not a one-size-fits-all option. There are many different types of lash extensions, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. If you’re thinking about getting them done, it’s important to understand the different types so that you can choose the right style for your needs.

But, do eyelash extensions really cause damage? Hmm, we're not going to lie: Yes, they can be damaging. But here are some of the culprits for this:

1. If a Lash Stylist isn’t properly trained, it can cause serious damage to your natural lashes. If they apply them improperly and fail to assess the health of your natural lashes, premature loss and recovery of your precious eyelashes could become an issue.

2. Proper aftercare is crucial. Caring for your investment should not end in the salon—it needs to continue at home as well! Cleaning your lashes regularly will help improve retention.

3. It's important that your Last Artist is gentle and meticulous when applying eyelash extensions. Your eyelash extensions should never touch each other (or what we call stickies) or the skin around them as this can lead to irritation, damage and loss of natural lashes over time.

4. If you have an allergy or sensitivity to adhesives, it's best to use false eyelashes (strip lashes) altogether until it has been properly evaluated by a doctor who specializes in the field of allergies and immunology.

Final Thoughts
Overall, eyelash extensions do not damage your eyelashes when they are applied properly. To prevent damaging natural lashes, lash extensions should be carefully selected (length and thickness) and applied correctly to one natural eyelash at a time.

There are many reasons why women love eyelash extensions. They make your eyes appear bigger, fuller, and darker. Plus, it makes your eyes look younger!

How to make your eyelash extensions last longer?

Showing up at the salon for your lash extensions only to leave a few days later with loose, falling out eyelashes isn't ideal. In this blog post, we'll share everything you need to know about making your lash extensions last longer.

The first step to making your lash extensions last longer is knowing how to care for them properly. Here are some tips on how to do that.

1. Wash your lashes

It's important to wash your lashes. This will help prevent damage from dust, dirt and makeup that can build up on them. Use an approved eyelash extension cleanser to wash them that's available to purchase from us.

2. Sleep on your back or switch to a silk or satin pillowcase.

Sleeping with your face pushed into a pillow can cause eyelash extensions to fall out quicker. If you use a silk pillowcase, your lashes will be pampered and less likely to get snagged. Everyone knows that a silk pillowcase can help reduce frizzy hair and face wrinkles—but did you know it also protects eyelashes from breakage?

3. Be gentle with your lashes and don’t play with them.

Do not play or pick your lashes. We understand how hard it is to resist the urge, but if an extension looks crooked or out of place, avoid touching or twisting it off; doing so could damage your natural lashes—a real loss!

4. Do not apply mascara on your lash extensions

Lash extensions can be tricky, but they're worth it when you get them right. If you're new to extensions, we recommend keeping your everyday makeup routine simple—and following these simple steps above will help keep them looking their best and their retention longer!

How do you deal with a bad eyelash extension job? Answers revealed.

Back in 2021, I pondered writing about a tricky subject but hesitated. Now, in 2023, I'm noticing more clients facing issues with subpar lash jobs. As someone passionate about lashes, I can't ignore this. So, I'm here to offer advice and practical solutions. While there's much to say, I've narrowed them down to the most crucial points for this guide.

1. Thorough research matters

Looking at a lash artist's work online may not be enough nowadays. Unfortunately, some people can take credit for others' work. I've even had my work copied by someone in my area! But let's save that story for another time.

When you research, look at their work and see if it suits your style and liking. Look at their reviews as well. Social proof holds significant weight, especially when you're evaluating their work through a screen.

2. Ask the right questions

As a client, you naturally trust the professional to do their job well. So, you might not be sure what to ask. Let me guide you.

Q1: How long have you been doing eyelash extensions? While it's possible for someone to exaggerate, this question can still give you a sense of their experience level. It's important to know this to set realistic expectations. If they're new, it's crucial not to expect perfection. We all start somewhere. And if you're dealing with someone claiming a decade or more of experience, it doesn't guarantee flawless result either. Sometimes, people can become complacent over time. The key is to ask this question to help you have reasonable expectations.

Q2: Where did you learn to do eyelash extensions? In today's age, a lot of information is shared online. If you can't find this information on the lash artist's social media or website, don't hesitate to ask. Knowing where they trained can give you an idea of their style, as the educator's techniques tend to influence the lash artist's work.

Q3: Where do you get your lash products? This might not be a question you'd naturally think to ask, but it's important. Some salons, even high-end ones, get their supplies from places like eBay or Amazon. This can be concerning, as these platforms are often associated with cheaper products. I've come across cases where low-quality adhesive, especially from these sources, can be more fumey, which may lead to eye irritation. It's worth considering for the safety and comfort of your lash experience.

Q4: What's your technique? When it comes to volume lashes, there are two main techniques: Russian Volumes (where fans are handmade as they go) and Premades (pre-made lashes). Some artists also use Promades (handmade fans prepared in advance), but the first two are the most common. I personally prefer handmade volumes because they allow for more creativity. They are customisable and lightweight.

3. Consult a professional

Initiate a conversation with your lash artist and let them know about the situation. Unfortunately, these situations are unpredictable and it's never our intention to cause you as such so please approach your lash artist with kindness. However, if you find this uncomfortable to do, consider consulting a general practitioner (GP) for guidance and clearance to have your lashes safely removed by a skilled lash artist.

Please bear in mind: While we, as lash artists, can offer recommendations, we are not qualified to provide medical advice. It is crucial to consult a licensed medical professional for any eye health concerns.

Remember, asking these questions can help you make an informed decision and ensure you're comfortable with your choice of lash artist. If you know of someone who has recently had a disappointing lash experience, feel free to share this with them. Otherwise, pass along this blog to anyone who may find it beneficial. Let's spread awareness.

What causes allergic reactions to eyelash extensions and how to handle them?

Getting eyelash extensions can be an exciting way to enhance your look. However, some clients experience unfortunate allergic reactions to the glue used during application. If you suddenly develop red, swollen, itchy eyes with excessive watering and discharge after a lash session, you may be having an allergic response.

What triggers allergic reactions to lash adhesives?

Lash glue ingredients like cyanoacrylates, formaldehyde, latex, or other chemicals can provoke allergies in those with sensitivities. Even if you've used a certain brand of glue before with no issues, repeated exposure over time may lead to the development of an allergy. Reactions can occur despite the lash artist using high-quality adhesives and proper technique.

How allergic reactions work in your body?

Allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to a foreign substance, causing release of chemicals like histamine. This leads to common allergy symptoms affecting the eyes, skin, respiratory system, and more. The body's response is unpredictable - you can develop new allergies suddenly at any point in life. Just because one person tolerates an ingredient doesn't mean another won't react.

What to do if you have a reaction?

First, inform your lash artist so they can note it in your client file. Be sure to see a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen. To manage a mild reaction, use cool compresses and over-the-counter antihistamines. Reactions are not the lash artist’s fault, but the result of each individual's unique body chemistry. With care and awareness, severe reactions can often be avoided.

As a lash artist with extensive experience, I always aim to act in my clients' best interest. Your feedback is invaluable.

Getting lash extensions should be an enjoyable, painless experience. While allergic reactions are an unfortunate possibility, being informed and prepared can help you handle them properly. Consult a medical professional for specific advice and treatment. With open communication and care, you and your lash artist can work together to make reactions less likely.

I hope you found this information helpful. Please feel free to share it with other lash clients you know or save it for reference in case of a future reaction. Being aware of the causes, symptoms, and treatments is key to properly managing allergy issues related to lash extensions.

The Ultimate Guide To Choosing The Best Lash Styles For You

The variety of different lash styles is overwhelming, but so is the number of different kinds of extensions out there. So I have decided to help you choose the best option by writing this blog post. I'll help you sift through all the options, from volume to length, and find the right style for your eyes.

There is a lot to consider when choosing the right lash style for you. Not only do you need to know the look that fits your personality, but you need to know the look that will complement your natural lashes and your eye shape.

How Do You Pick The Right Eyelash Extensions?

There are many different kinds of eyelash extensions available, including those made from various materials and in a variety of lengths, volumes, and curls. It is important to pay attention to all these factors when choosing which ones will best suit you. Your eyelash artist will discuss all of the materials that are available and make recommendations based on your preferences.

Eyelash Extension Length

Choosing the wrong length of eyelash extensions could damage your natural lashes and make you uncomfortable. The lashes could also be too heavy, thus preventing lash follicles from growing healthy lashes. For example, if your natural eyelashes are 5mm long and you want extensions that are 10mm long—that would definitely drag down the growth of your own eyelashes! The rule of thumb is that the extensions should be at 3mm longer than **natural** lashes.

Thicker extensions will make the most dramatic change, while thinner ones can be used to accentuate what you already have. So if you want eyelash extensions that are both dramatic and lightweight, go with a thin diameter. You'll get the volume without sacrificing balance.

 Eyelash Extension Volume

Lash extensions have been around since the early 2000s, but they really gained popularity in 2010. People wanted more than just length and curl—they wanted volume lashes. Volume is achieved by applying multiple extensions to a single lash (not at the roots). As a result, they give darker and softer results without damaging the natural lashes themselves.

 Eyelash Extension Curl Type

There are several types of eyelash extensions—B-curl, C-curl, CC-curl, D-curl, and L+ curl, L-curl, and M-curl.

  • The B-curl is the most "natural" curl. This technique is most suitable for people with straight lashes who need to lift their eyelids a little.

  • The C & CC-curl are the most popular curls and work best for almost any eye type.

  • The D-curl creates a more dramatic lift and is the curliest out of the range.

  • The L, L+, and M curl lifts up at the outer corners of your eyes. These 3 special curls are designed to create bolder looks like foxy, extreme cat's eyes, and eyeliner effect.

What Factors Should Guide You To Make The Right Choice Of Eyelashes?

Determine your eye shape

While most eye products are designed for standard use, eyelash extensions come in many different shapes and sizes. For this reason, to get the look you desire, it is best that you determine what kind of extension will work well with your particular eye structure.

Here are some things to consider about your eyes:

  • The size of your eyes - Do your eyes look small, large, or medium in size?

  • The placement of your eyes - They may be wide apart, close together or deep-set.

  • Allergies or chemical sensitivities that you could have with certain materials.

  • The amount of time and effort you’re willing to devote to upkeep.

  • Your eye color.

  • Eye shape can be round, almond-shaped, protruding or drooping.

  • Your natural lashes - length, direction, thickness and color.

  • Hooded and monolid eyelids require more consideration than other types of eyelids

Different Lash Extension Styles

Eyelash extensions give you a chance to go from natural to dramatic, so before undergoing the treatment, decide on your desired look. For example, you may choose to go for the type of eyelashes that are long and natural, or short but dramatic, it's like choosing your own poison! You can also add a pop of color if you are feeling creative or just because.

Here are some examples of the different lash extension styles:

  • Cat-eye. Cat-eye is a type of eyelash extension that uses shorter extensions in the inner corner, and longer ones on the outer corner. The result creates what looks like a winged eye style.

  • Wet-look lashes are created by using narrow, pretty much-closed fans, which should be applied individually to achieve the desired effect.

  • Wispy. Wispy lashes are the height of fashion right now because they give off a feathery, ethereal look. They're perfect for people who want to look dramatic without being too obvious about it—no dark mascara or thick eyeliner here!

  • Eyeliner effect. This style is best created with L curl. It gives a dramatic look that's both bold and feminine at the same time.

  • Squirrel. This is considered the 'universal' mapping wherein the length of lashes increases, with shorter ones on the inner corner of your eye and longer extensions from middle to outer and finishing it with shorter lengths to avoid a droopy look.

  • Coloured. Hooray for coloured lashes! Want to stand our from a festival or any special event? Then you should try this! It can be applied as an accent or a full set. Take your pick!

It is best to let your stylist make the decisions about which lash style and level of fullness will work best for you. They have more experience with lashes and can help ensure that you are satisfied with the results.

Final Thoughts

Although eyes come in many shapes and sizes, some general rules apply as to what looks best with which type of eye. The result of designing a set of eyelashes for a specific eye shape is to emphasize the beauty inherent in all eyes.

So, the choice is yours. Which style will you choose? You can find the perfect lash extension style which will complement your eyes and facial features while enhancing your overall look, making you feel sexy and confident. Make it bold and daring or a simple enhancement; you decide!
